Anderfield Ranch rests on a hidden 12-acre property off of Folsom Lake in El Dorado Hills, CA. As a husband-and-wife team, John and Jane work to maintain a tranquil setting for all horses and their owners. We both have been in the environmental field for our entire careers and had dreamed of a place where we could live sustainably when we retire. The ideal property was found in 2019 through Jane’s book club friends who did not want them to move too far away. It was love at first sight when John and Jane first visited the property and walked down to Folsom Lake. However, we had to look past the old horse shelters, broken fences and fallen trees to see the possibilities.
We first tackled the fences to better secure the horses, then worked to re-build and replace the horse shelters necessary to retain the few remaining horse boarders and attract new ones. We saw an immediate need to refurbish the existing horse arena and construct a round pen. Arena lighting were added and mud abatement was addressed in the first winter. A swimming pool and a restroom facility for the boarders was added in 2020.
To move toward our sustainability goals, we will be installing a solar array and community garden in 2021. We have goats for brush abatement and will add chickens and sheep for eggs and dairy products.
Our vision is to create an environment where our environmental colleagues, friends, family and boarders can step away from their daily lives, reflect on nature, and contemplate actions that can be taken to build a better future.
